Calculation checklist

Test your method

Answer each question before opening the explanation. These are general study questions—not questions copied from the state exam.

1. A 24 kVA single-phase transformer has a 240 V secondary. What is the full-load secondary current?

Answer: 100 A. Divide volt-amperes by voltage: 24,000 ÷ 240 = 100.

2. What is the first step when a problem asks for motor branch-circuit conductor size?

Answer: Identify the applicable motor full-load current from the required NEC table, then apply the conductor-sizing rule. Do not automatically use the nameplate current.

3. Why can a 90°C conductor still be limited to the 75°C ampacity column?

Answer: The connected terminal or equipment rating may limit the allowable ampacity. The 90°C value may still be useful for correction or adjustment when permitted.

4. What does an effective ground-fault current path need to accomplish?

Answer: Carry fault current back to the source with sufficiently low impedance so the protective device operates promptly.

5. What should a change order clearly identify?

Answer: The change in scope, price, schedule, authorization, and any effect on other work.

6. Why is job overhead included in an estimate?

Answer: The business must recover indirect costs such as supervision, insurance, vehicles, office expenses, tools, and administration.

7. What condition should a supervised alarm pathway report when continuity is lost?

Answer: A trouble condition, subject to the system design and applicable rules.

8. A continuous load is calculated at 32 A. What is 125% of that load?

Answer: 40 A. Multiply 32 × 1.25.

9. When several correction or adjustment rules apply, what should you do?

Answer: Follow the applicable code method and verify the final adjusted ampacity against the load, terminals, and overcurrent-protection rules.

10. What is the best response after missing a timed code question?

Answer: Locate the controlling rule, write down the search path that should have led there, and repeat a similar problem until the process is reliable.
