Electrical Troubleshooting Guide
Use a safe, repeatable process instead of guessing or repeatedly resetting devices.
Troubleshooting starts with defining the symptom and making the condition safe. Ask what changed, when the problem started, which loads are affected, and whether there is heat, odor, arcing, water, visible damage or unstable voltage.
Field method
Determine the scope: one device, one branch circuit, one panel, or the entire service. Review drawings and labels, identify every energy source, and follow the employer’s lockout/tagout procedure before opening or testing de-energized equipment.
Use a properly rated meter and prove the tester before and after an absence-of-voltage test. Energized diagnostics require qualified personnel, justified work practices, shock and arc-flash risk assessment, boundaries and PPE.
Common mistakes
For a tripping breaker, do not keep resetting it. Isolate loads and look for overload, ground fault, short circuit or damaged equipment. For bright/dim lighting or suspected lost neutral, disconnect sensitive equipment and treat it as urgent. For a GFCI that will not reset, remove downstream loads and confirm line/load placement before replacement.
Document measured voltage, current, resistance only when appropriate, equipment state and corrective action. Stop when conditions exceed training, available PPE, test-equipment rating or authorization.
