How to Calculate Conduit Fill
Plan raceway fill using conductor area, raceway area, and the permitted percentage.
Conduit fill protects conductors from damage during pulling and helps control heat. Start by identifying the exact raceway type and trade size. EMT, IMC, rigid metal conduit, and PVC of the same trade size do not always have the same internal area.
Field method
Then identify every conductor by insulation type and size. The outside area of a THHN/THWN-2 conductor is not the same as bare copper area. Add the listed area of every conductor in the raceway, including conductors of different sizes.
The commonly used Chapter 9 percentage depends on conductor count: one conductor, two conductors, or more than two. A simple field example is nine 12 AWG THHN/THWN-2 conductors in 3/4-inch EMT. Common mistakes
Common mistakes include using copper circular-mil area instead of insulated-conductor area, treating nipples like full-length raceways, forgetting equipment grounding conductors, and assuming every brand or conductor listing has identical dimensions.
