How to Calculate Electrical Box Fill

Count conductors, devices, grounds, clamps, and fittings before choosing a box.

Box fill is a volume calculation, not simply a count of wires. Every item that enters or occupies the box must be classified correctly before the allowances are added.

Field method

Each insulated conductor that originates outside and terminates or is spliced in the box generally contributes one conductor-volume allowance. Conductors that pass through without splice or termination also count. Pigtails that originate and remain entirely inside are treated differently.

All equipment grounding conductors together use a grouped allowance based on the largest grounding conductor, with additional treatment where more than four are present under newer editions. A device yoke typically contributes two allowances based on the largest conductor connected to it. Internal clamps and support fittings may add allowances.

Common mistakes

A good field workflow is to sketch the cables or raceways entering the box, count insulated conductors by size, then list grounds, devices, clamps and fittings separately. Compare the required cubic inches with the volume marked on the box.

Common errors are counting grounds individually under the wrong rule, forgetting a device yoke, using the smallest conductor for every allowance, or relying on nominal box dimensions instead of marked volume.

Start with NEC 314.16 and the applicable conductor-volume table. Verify the adopted edition because detailed grounding-conductor treatment has changed.
